With its aerodynamic profile, bespoke chassis design and new range of finely tuned BMW TwinPower Turbo engines, The 4 is a thrill to drive.
The proportions, aerodynamics, 50:50 weight distribution and low centre of gravity of the new BMW 4 Series create the perfect combination for an exhilarating and engaging driving experience.
Building on the legendary BMW 3 Series' reputation for dynamic ability, every element of the new 4 Series has been tuned, tailored and tested extensively to hone its capabilities even further – delivering stunning performance and superlative handling.
A vital element in the agility and efficiency of the new 4 Series is the introduction of Mild Hybrid technology to a number of models.
Delivering an extra 11HP of electric power this technology is able to sharpen power delivery whilst optimising efficiency.
Within the 4 Series range there are three models that offer this technology the 420d, 420d xDrive and M440i xDrive all providing benefits of performance and consumption optimisation.
BMW Mild Hybrid technology (48V) has two sole purposes: to recover kinetic energy during braking and to support the combustion engine when accelerating. By utilising the 48V starter motor this helps to produce that additional power, which can be used to boost acceleration, without using any additional fuel.
This reconfigured engine set-up allows for flexibility in different driving scenarios. The engine is responsive in delivering extra power when needed whilst harbouring the power in an effective and efficient way.
The 4 Series aims to set a new benchmark for enhanced driving dynamics, agile handling, superb steering and impressive braking performance, all delivered by a bespoke chassis set up that is finely tuned to each and every model.
A raft of cutting-edge chassis innovations are employed to heighten the dynamic capabilities of The 4. The standard lift-related dampers aid performance and comfort, reducing body movement on bumpy road surfaces as well as improved handling around corners. Increased stiffness of the body structure and suspension mountings strengthen the distinctive driving qualities of all 4 Series models.

M Performance or M Sport Pro Edition models benefit from the highly advanced Adaptive M Suspension system. Combining the characteristics of the M Sport suspension with electronically controlled dampers, the driver has the option to adjust their response dependent on the driving style, utilising the COMFORT, SPORT and ADAPTIVE modes. The Adaptive M Suspension provides the driver with the sportiest and most comfortable suspension variant available.
A new and improved range of BMW TwinPower Turbo four and six-cylinder engines offer fantastic choice with three petrol and two diesel variants available from launch, with the line-up spearheaded by the new 3.0 litre, six-cylinder M440i xDrive.
All engines are married to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission as standard that has been revised to provide even sharper shift characteristics twinned with greater efficiency and refinement.
Moreover, Mild Hybrid technology (48V) in all diesel models and the flagship M440i xDrive ensures even sharper power delivery combined with reduced fuel consumption and emissions.
BMW xDrive, the intelligent all-wheel drive system is available in the 420d and standard on six-cylinder models.

* Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO₂ figures with other cars tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. The CO₂ figures shown above have been determined according to the WLTP test. WLTP has been used as the applicable CO₂ figure from 1 April 2020 for first year vehicle tax (VED) and from 6 April 2020 for company car tax (BIK). The CO₂ figures were previously based on the NEDC equivalent.
