Mind the gap: integrating PTI risk management
Our Platform-Train Interface Risk Assessment Tool promotes a joined-up approach to PTI risk assessment.

In our industry, collaborating for efficiency is nothing new. But what’s newer, and something we’re keen to continue driving, is the ability to collate data from multiple locations and businesses. This approach:
enables organisations to confidently manage their platform-train interface (PTI) risks
helps remove siloed thinking and processes
allows industry to identify and resolve common issues together.
But even today, several rail organisations are still carrying out risk assessments using individual, paper-based systems. This is particularly true when it comes to evaluating the risks associated with the PTI. To that end, we’ve developed the PTI Risk Assessment Tool to help our members identify hazards and measure their risks in a common, consistent way.
The tool is easily accessible on the web or via an app. Usable from an office computer or from a portable device on-site, the tool makes it very simple to log and explore PTI concerns.
In particular, users can review existing PTI safety arrangements and directly assess the level of risk using clear and simple criteria. They also have the option of uploading supporting documents and images to bolster the information in their report. This functionality can help inform risk mitigation measures on a broader scale, across several stations.
Risk assess infinite platform and train combinations.
Choose between detailed and basic assessments.
Add images to assessments.
Generate reports automatically.
Customise their organisation’s assessment questions.
View and contribute to other companies’ risk assessments.
Enable users to benchmark risk exposure and risk control score.
Access technical support on demand.
Last year, we improved the PTI Risk Assessment Tool. The enhancements were suggested by PTI specialists and backed by the Office of Rail and Road. During this round of updates, we made it possible to:
Assign tasks and record recommendations.
Upload supporting documents and materials.
Access a wider range of customisable questions that focus on passenger profiles, accessibility, and contingency.
Benchmark each station on a route.
Have confidence that the approach is fully aligned with the associated Railway Industry Standards.
‘Exploiting the use of data’ is a key part of our five-year Strategic Business Plan. This tool is just one example of how we’re laying this foundation. We hope, by creating and maintaining resources just like this, we can continue to build confidence in the digital offerings available to rail and help industry make the most of the masses of information already at its fingertips.
